Discover the Foundations of South Asian Classical Music with Alam Khan
Location: South Asia Institute, 1925 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60616
Free Admission
Explore the rich history, structure, and expressive beauty of Hindustani ragas in an engaging session led by renowned musician Alam Khan, one of today’s most dedicated practitioners of Indian classical music.
Alam Khan serves as the senior instructor at the Ali Akbar College of Music in the Bay Area—the oldest institution in the U.S. devoted to Indian classical music, founded in 1968 by his legendary father, Ali Akbar Khan. Trained from the age of seven in the traditional guru-shishya method, Alam is the direct heir to the Senia Maihar gharana, a musical lineage established in the 19th century by his grandfather, Baba Alauddin Khan. This tradition has shaped the works of influential artists such as Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee.
In this session, Alam will offer insights into the history of the music, his family’s artistic legacy, and the nuances of his instrument, the sarod. Open to both musicians and music enthusiasts, this program offers a rare opportunity to deepen your understanding and appreciation of one of the world’s oldest musical traditions.
🎶 All experience levels are welcome.
This event is made possible through the support of a Gig Fund Grant from Arts Midwest.
